Nostrification

In order to have a degree obtained at a foreign university recognised, you must successfully complete MedUni Vienna's nostrification process.

Preconditions for applying are the completion of a course of study at a foreign university, this course being essentially equivalent to that of MedUni Vienna, and proof that nostrification is necessary to enable you to practice your profession. It is therefore recommended that you check with the Austrian Medical Association before submitting your application. Equally, you must not have made another application in Austria.

How to obtain a positive ruling

Submit originals of all necessary documents, with translations by a sworn translator, if necessary, and pay the nostrification tax of €150. Once you have successfully submitted your documents, the investigation process starts by comparing the curriculum you have studied with that of MedUni Vienna. Your knowledge will then be tested in a random sample test comprising 250 questions from the fields of emergency and critical care, internal medicine, surgery, gynaecology, paediatrics, dermatology, neurology, psychiatry, ophthalmology and ear nose and throat medicine. You will be informed in good time of the exact date of the test. You cannot fail this test. The aim is to determine which and how many exams you might need to sit. Please note you must have an adequate knowledge of German in order to sit the test. You will then receive a positive or negative ruling.
