Success for the Department of Radiation Oncology's Machine Learning team

(Vienna, 12 June 2020) The Machine Learning team at MedUni Vienna's Department of Radiation Oncology has scored a major success in a highly competitive global contest organised by the world’s largest medical physics association (American Association for Physicists in Medicine (AAPM)). The team took second place in the international Open Knowledge-Based Planning Challenge (OpenKBP Grand Challenge).

Vienna's medical physics/ITC team was only beaten by a team of Chinese scientists. The aim of the competition, which ran over several months, was to produce appropriate treatment schedules for precision radiotherapy using the very latest Deep Learning technology, thereby further increasing the efficacy and tolerability of radiotherapy. This success in an international contest is an important validation of the continuous technological development at the Department in terms of making the very latest and gentlest high-precision techniques available to cancer patients.
