(Vienna, 14 April 2017) Michael Gnant – Head of the Department of Surgery at MedUni Vienna and Vienna General Hospital – has been affiliated as a corresponding member of the Austrian Academy of Sciences (ÖAW) in the mathematics-natural sciences class.
At its electoral session on 7 April 2017, the Austrian Academy of Sciences (ÖAW) affiliated a total of 34 new members. The 10 female and 24 male researchers from home and abroad, representing many different disciplines, are being given this membership in recognition of their outstanding scientific achievements and their high standing among experts in their respective fields.
Two full members were elected in the philosophy-history class and three full members in the mathematics-natural sciences class, as were thirteen corresponding members within Austria and six corresponding members from abroad.
About Michael Gnant
Michael Gnant studied medicine in Vienna and Munich, gained his doctorate in 1988 and then specialised in surgery, specifically in surgical oncology. On his return from the USA (National Cancer Institute in Bethesda), he was initially appointed professor of surgical-experimental oncology at MedUni Vienna in 2004 and then professor of surgery in 2008.
The native of Vienna and father to two daughters works as a surgeon at MedUni Vienna and Vienna General Hospital, heads up the Breast Health Center at the Medical University of Vienna and has been Head of MedUni Vienna’s Department of Surgery since 2014. He has been Chairman of the Senate of MedUni Vienna since 2015.
His work in cancer research and in health and research development has earned him numerous national and international research prizes and awards. He is a member of many national and international professional societies and is a reviewer for prestigious scientific publications such as The Lancet and the New England Journal of Medicine. In addition to this, he is President of the Austrian Breast & Colorectal Cancer Study Group (ABCSG). Many of the 410 papers he has so far written have been published in leading journals: his h-index is 56. Michael Gnant is also represented in numerous international scientific associations.vertreten.
